Brunchin' It at Saltine in Jackson, Mississippi

Saltine Restaurant, Jackson Mississippi

Very few things in this world make me as happy as brunch does!  Something about leisurely starting your day, having an array of food options and of course the simple fact that drinking way too much coffee is considered socially acceptable, makes brunch one of my favorite excuses at laziness!  So, when road tripping across the states, the simple act of brunching automatically puts me in vacation mode!  That's why when we stumbled upon this gem of a place in Jackson, Mississippi, I couldn't wait to share it with you!  Whether visiting Mississippi or passing through, I promise this place is a must stop and totally worth going out of the way for!  Just north of Interstate 20, sits an old schoolhouse that has been reinvented!

Inside you'll find Saltine Restaurant and Oyster Bar.  Upon entering you're met with smiling faces and friendly conversation.  This is southern hospitality at it's finest!  Paired with nautical decor, this place instantaneously puts you in relax and enjoy mode!

The nautical decor and casual atmosphere makes it perfectly suitable for children; P & K loved all the wall murals and watching all the hustle and bustle in the open air oyster bar!

They even had the cutest themed coloring pages, which as any parent knows, is key to entertaining the kids when out.

But I could also see, with such a well curated ambiance, this place would be the perfect spot for date night!

And while I can't personally speak to the dinner menu, if it's even half as good as their brunch menu, you'll be in good hands!  Plus their oyster selection looked amazing!

We indulged in coffee (the nitro cold brew was out of this world!)  And from the recommendation of our server, Brian ordered the biscuits and gravy and added chicken to it.  It was LIFE CHANGING!  And so good he (and I) devoured it before I could even snap a pic!

Also, to try are their grits...done right!  And the food item that made me find this restuaruant in the first place was THIS house made cinnamon roll!

Three served in a cast iron skillet.  I totally underestimated the size, ordering two, one for me, one for the kids.  Trust me when I say the four of us could have split it!  But the leftover made for an awesome treat in the car later that afternoon!

So, whether you're headed to Mississippi, passing through, or lucky enough to be local, I promise this is an American Must Eat!

Ready, Set, Road Trip!

Hard to believe we've been back from our road trip for a couple weeks now.  If you've been following along on Insta Stories, you know all to well that the four of us packed our bags and hit the road for two weeks for our biennial American Road Trip.  (in case you missed it, our first one we traveled the east coast when the twins were 6 months old.).  This go around, P & K were two and half and honestly, Brian and I weren't sure what to expect when traveling cross country with toddlers.  We did our research, crossed our fingers and hoped for the best.  And I have to say, those two weeks were the best we've had all year!  The kids were awesome, we had quality family time and Bri and I were even able to squeeze in some much needed date nights...even if that meant drinks on the patio while the kids slept inside!  We explored new places and discovered some really awesome must see's that we can't wait to share with you!  Just like our last road trip, I'm so happy we decided to take the time and go and would encourage all of you to do the same.  Life at home can so often fly by and there's something really special about disconnecting from your daily life and exploring new places with the ones you love!

Now, with all that being said...we took a HUGE gamble with day one and decided to travel 12 hours from Atlanta to our final destination in Texas.  In order to break the day up, and give all of us some much needed time out of the car, I searched for a place that would be a good pit stop for day one.  Jackson just happened to be smack dab in the middle, and considering neither Brian or I had ever been there, we figured this would be a great first stop of our trip!

We left Atlanta at 5 am - not too terribly early, but early enough for the kiddos to fall back asleep for a couple hours in the car.  We made a quick coffee stop, then bee-lined it to Jackson, making it there right around 11 am.  Which was all too perfect, as this boy of mine needed to get out and RUN!!

We parked our car at N State Street and Mitchell Ave, and enjoyed walking (and running around) the quaint street!  We found the 1940's architecture and brightly painted store fronts to be so charming and loved that this part of town had an atmosphere brimming with possibility and revitalization!

From there, we walked a block north to an old schoolhouse that has been reinvented as a multi-use space and found the most amazing spot for brunch!!

Saltine Oyster Bar, Jackson, Mississippi

Saltine Oyster Bar was definitely a highlight of our entire trip, and while the oysters looked amazing, we opted to order off their weekend brunch menu...and I'm not exaggerating when I say this place was the best BRUNCH of our life!!  For all the details and amazing decor pics, see our full review here!

The house made cinnamon rolls are reason enough to drive the 6 hours there!

So, bellies full, legs stretched and a whole lot of coffee had all of us ready to get back in the car for our next leg of the trip!

Next stop....Texas!
