How To Grow Strawberries In Containers

May 5, 2021 Michelle Cannon Smith
How to Grow Container Strawberries

When it comes to Spring, there is nothing I love more than a fresh picked, homegrown Strawberry! They’re a favorite to grow with my kids, and their rewarding sweet fruit is a delight to all! When it comes to growing them, my favorite method is container strawberries! They look great on a front porch or deck and practically guarantee growth!

The real trick is purchasing the right container! That's why I LOVE these $3 white planters!!!

Strawberries need consistent watering to thrive and a good 1-2” daily during fruit bearing season. That’s why these self-watering planters are so great! That magical tray attached to the bottom (it can remove for cleaning as well) will hold overflow. Always ensuring your strawberry plant has the water needed to thrive and can help herself when she needs an extra drink.

Now I do still water consistenty and love using my brass watering lance shown above. It’s an investment for sure, but one that has stood the test of time in my garden! And after watering, this planter ensures my strawberries are always taken care of! And truth be told, our strawberries grew the best they ever have last year, and I mainly attibute it to these little planters!

When it comes to soil for strawberries, this potting mix is my go to! I also use this strawberry food and feed once a month in the growing season to keep those strawberries coming!

And one final important thing to note when growing strawberries… if the fruit touches soil it will rot! Again, another reason why I love these small 8” planters, the fruit can just hang over the side. If growing in your garden or larger containers, consider adding either landscape fabric, natural mulch or strawberry supports to keep your fruit off the ground! Happy growing friends!!!
