Enjoying The Ride | My New Bike and My New Perspective

papillionaire bicycle

As many of you know, my mom was called home this past Spring.  There's not a day that goes by that I don't miss her terribly.  In looking for ways to stay connected to her, I've really started to have a change of outlook and perspective on this life and the choices and things I bring into it.  My mom loved bike rides...LOVED!  She loved the freedom it gave her as a girl and I think also loved the simple joy it brought into her life as she got older.  Her and my dad had a pair of his and hes when they got married.  She later found a beautiful vintage red one that she loved.  And last fall she wanted to invest in a beautiful, timeless, well made bike.  Her and my brother did a ton of research and found this great Australia company called Papillionaire, they also have a shop in Brooklyn.  After some phone calls to the shop up north, she went with a beautiful creme colored mixte.  That thing is gorgeous and rides like a dream!!!  She loved it and her and my dad spent last fall enjoying rides together.

I haven't owned a bike since I was a a girl and in wanting to give homage to my mom and the bikes my parents always had together, Brian and I purchased a set of his and hers in black!  We too went with Papillionaire and I also went with the mixte frame.  Mine just arrived a week ago and I've already loved the freedom it gives me and the joy it brings.  Somehow, mothers always know best!

Bike Trailer Filled With Flowers

We also invested in this bike trailer.  After weighing the pros and cons to individual kid seats vs a trailer, we opted for the trailer simply to allow myself to cart both P & K around town during the week.  So, far we've LOVED it!  P & K have enjoyed our daily rides and it easily attaches and removes from our bikes, making it a breeze for us to switch it out from one bike to another.  It also converts to a jogging stroller.  Which I have to say it super convenient and a nice additional feature, but I wouldn't suggest purchasing this unit for the jogging feature alone.

While it works, I think for the price point you could find something much better suited for that task.  That being said, Brian does jog with it, and I have used it walking to our local shops and market.  But again, I love it for it's bike trailer feature!  And while it's perfect for toting the kids around, the seat also lays flat making it perfect for carrying goods.  On this day, I rode to Lowes to purchase flowers and greenery for our front steps,  And I have to say, there's something really enjoyable and relaxing about biking to the store, and loading up your carrier with a bunch of pretty flowers!

For the front I purchased this basket.  I love its large size, perfect for a purse or errand essentials!  Needless to say my new set of wheels brings joy and function into my life.  It's getting me outdoors more and giving me and the kids an excuse to cruise around town.  So, this week friends, I hope you enjoy the ride!  Call or visit with the ones you love, share a laugh and find joy in the ordinary!

Brunchin' It at Saltine in Jackson, Mississippi

Saltine Restaurant, Jackson Mississippi

Very few things in this world make me as happy as brunch does!  Something about leisurely starting your day, having an array of food options and of course the simple fact that drinking way too much coffee is considered socially acceptable, makes brunch one of my favorite excuses at laziness!  So, when road tripping across the states, the simple act of brunching automatically puts me in vacation mode!  That's why when we stumbled upon this gem of a place in Jackson, Mississippi, I couldn't wait to share it with you!  Whether visiting Mississippi or passing through, I promise this place is a must stop and totally worth going out of the way for!  Just north of Interstate 20, sits an old schoolhouse that has been reinvented!

Saltine Restaurant, Jackson Mississippi

Inside you'll find Saltine Restaurant and Oyster Bar.  Upon entering you're met with smiling faces and friendly conversation.  This is southern hospitality at it's finest!  Paired with nautical decor, this place instantaneously puts you in relax and enjoy mode!

The nautical decor and casual atmosphere makes it perfectly suitable for children; P & K loved all the wall murals and watching all the hustle and bustle in the open air oyster bar!

They even had the cutest themed coloring pages, which as any parent knows, is key to entertaining the kids when out.

But I could also see, with such a well curated ambiance, this place would be the perfect spot for date night!

And while I can't personally speak to the dinner menu, if it's even half as good as their brunch menu, you'll be in good hands!  Plus their oyster selection looked amazing!

Saltine Restaurant, Brunch Menu, Jackson Mississippi

We indulged in coffee (the nitro cold brew was out of this world!)  And from the recommendation of our server, Brian ordered the biscuits and gravy and added chicken to it.  It was LIFE CHANGING!  And so good he (and I) devoured it before I could even snap a pic!

Saltine Restaurant, Jackson Mississippi

Also, to try are their grits...done right!  And the food item that made me find this restuaruant in the first place was THIS house made cinnamon roll!

Saltine Restaurant, Jackson Mississippi

Three served in a cast iron skillet.  I totally underestimated the size, ordering two, one for me, one for the kids.  Trust me when I say the four of us could have split it!  But the leftover made for an awesome treat in the car later that afternoon!

So, whether you're headed to Mississippi, passing through, or lucky enough to be local, I promise this is an American Must Eat!

Bon Appetit and Happy Brunchin!  Michelle

Ready, Set Roadtrip! First Stop : Jackson, Mississippi

Ready, Set, Road Trip!

Hard to believe we've been back from our road trip for a couple weeks now.  If you've been following along on Insta Stories, you know all to well that the four of us packed our bags and hit the road for two weeks for our biennial American Road Trip.  (in case you missed it, our first one we traveled the east coast when the twins were 6 months old.).  This go around, P & K were two and half and honestly, Brian and I weren't sure what to expect when traveling cross country with toddlers.  We did our research, crossed our fingers and hoped for the best.  And I have to say, those two weeks were the best we've had all year!  The kids were awesome, we had quality family time and Bri and I were even able to squeeze in some much needed date nights...even if that meant drinks on the patio while the kids slept inside!  We explored new places and discovered some really awesome must see's that we can't wait to share with you!  Just like our last road trip, I'm so happy we decided to take the time and go and would encourage all of you to do the same.  Life at home can so often fly by and there's something really special about disconnecting from your daily life and exploring new places with the ones you love!

Now, with all that being said...we took a HUGE gamble with day one and decided to travel 12 hours from Atlanta to our final destination in Texas.  In order to break the day up, and give all of us some much needed time out of the car, I searched for a place that would be a good pit stop for day one.  Jackson just happened to be smack dab in the middle, and considering neither Brian or I had ever been there, we figured this would be a great first stop of our trip!

Visit Jackson, Mississippi

We left Atlanta at 5 am - not too terribly early, but early enough for the kiddos to fall back asleep for a couple hours in the car.  We made a quick coffee stop, then bee-lined it to Jackson, making it there right around 11 am.  Which was all too perfect, as this boy of mine needed to get out and RUN!!

We parked our car at N State Street and Mitchell Ave, and enjoyed walking (and running around) the quaint street!  We found the 1940's architecture and brightly painted store fronts to be so charming and loved that this part of town had an atmosphere brimming with possibility and revitalization!

From there, we walked a block north to an old schoolhouse that has been reinvented as a multi-use space and found the most amazing spot for brunch!!

Saltine Oyster Bar, Jackson, Mississippi

Saltine Oyster Bar was definitely a highlight of our entire trip, and while the oysters looked amazing, we opted to order off their weekend brunch menu...and I'm not exaggerating when I say this place was the best BRUNCH of our life!!  For all the details and amazing decor pics, see our full review here!

The house made cinnamon rolls are reason enough to drive the 6 hours there!

So, bellies full, legs stretched and a whole lot of coffee had all of us ready to get back in the car for our next leg of the trip!

Next stop....Texas!

Thanks for following along!  Much more to share from our American Road Trip...in the meantime would love to hear your Road Trip Favorites!

Lots of Love your way!  Michelle

Support Local | BlueTop, Chamblee

Bluetop, Chamblee, Atlanta, Georgia Restaurant (17).jpg

Every year, as the dog days of summer come to an end, I long for summer not to go!  So tonight, we decided to head out locally, celebrate summer and enjoy a dinner al fresco out with the kids.  I love seeing our little in town neighborhood of Atlanta growing and thriving, so tonight we headed out to our newest neighborhood addition, BlueTop.

The perfect spot for drinks after work, or a great place to let the kids run around and play (they have games galore along with kid sized picnic tables!) while you enjoy a somewhat peaceful dinner!  And of course the food was exactly what I craved on this hot summer night!  I mean look at this thing?!  This Angry Fried Chicken Sandwich spoke to this southern girl's heart!

And of course my native Maine husband had to try the lobster corn dog ~ I stole it from him it was so good!

The lamb sloppy joe was a winner!  (Gosh, we ordered a lot!)

COPY CODE SNIPPET

And these oysters on the half shell with bloody mary mignonette made me long for Sunday Brunch!!!

So, obviously, if you're in the Atlanta area, head over to this new little gem.  And for the rest of you, head out, this week and support local!  Whether it be a new dig or an established favorite, show your support for the local businesses you love!  I know they'd appreciate it!  Plus, it was really nice for Brian and I to have a dinner out locally!  And with the kids entertained, it almost felt like date night!

Happy Tuesday Friends!

Globally Inspired Bathroom

Globally Inspired Bathroom

Ok, today's day three of this little series! (see design style 1 & 2, here & here).  If you're just stopping by.  Let me quickly catch you up.  After coming home from a two week roadtrip, we found our downstairs bathroom to have a wall saturated in water.  A crowbar and an hour later revealed mold that extends into our kitchen.  So, while we're in the process of remedying and demo-ing the space, we're looking ahead to what style we're wanting to go with in renovating our first room in the house, the bathroom.  And more specifically the bathroom the kids use along with guests.  (if you want to stay up to date on the process, be sure to follow us on Instagram ~ we're adding to stories pretty regularly these days!)  So, that brings us to today's Globally Inspired Post.   Now this design style is one that would traditionally be out of my comfort zone.  But recently, I've come to love and appreciate Moroccan and Portugal tiles, and have, like most, taken note of the current cement tile floor trend!  I lean towards it's bohemian style and ability to instantly add character to a space.  Truth be told, in curating images for these posts, I thought this style would be a look that Brian wasn't feeling, but surprisingly (I think even to himself), he too is kinda diggin' the "tile as art" in the bathroom look.  We both tend to lean towards more of a blue and white color scheme with this look and like the addition of natural tones.  Here's the three pics that we're currently LOVING:

image via Domino

I went crazy when I found this image.  Like Oprah aha moment crazy!  From the marble tile, to the simple, yet dramatic patterned tile display.  Nothing about this is overpowering, yet it sends such a strong message.  I love this image so much, that it even has me contemplating getting rid of a tub entirely in our space!

image via Jenna Sue Design

Jenna Sue knows how to curate a beautiful space!  The before photos alone are worth checking out this post's transformation!  I love her choice in tile and her choice with the vanity!  This sink has me thinking new possibilities when choosing a vanity!

Ok, ok, so this isn't a bathroom.  But this tile?!  I want to live in this space.  This space says personality and history all in one!  There's a story here and I want to live it!  Sigh.  Yeah, I can't explain it, it's just love!

Well, there ya go.  Some global, bohemian, eclectic inspiration.  If I hesitate towards this style it's for one reason and one reason only.  Can I pull it off?!  This look is so different than anything I've ever gone with.  You know, like a well intentioned outfit, that on someone else is stunning, but when worn personally, you feel like a fraud.  That's what this style is for me.  And I know, I know, you can do anything you want in your house.  I just worry that going so far out of my comfort zone would create a beautiful house, but somehow would never really feel like home.

Well, there ya go.  Design Style 3 to consider.  What are your thoughts?  Like?  Love?  You know I love to hear your thoughts!

Lots of love your way today!  Michelle

Industrial Inspired Bathroom

Industrial Inspired Bathroom

Hello guys!  Gosh, it feels good to be back in the designing mindset!  Something about gathering pretty inspiration really helps motivate me to get things going!  So today, I'm sharing the second design style we're currently inspired by for our bathroom overhaul (you can see our first design style here!)  Today's style, Industrial, and more specifically for these bathrooms, black and white!  There's something classic about the simple contrast of these two tones and when put in home decor, adds an instant sharpness and class to a space.  For Brian and I, we've always been drawn to this style.  I love it for it's antique nods, and Brian loves it for its craftsmanship.  In our last house, I felt we found the perfect balance of this style for both of us!  So, in looking for current inspiration, we were instantly drawn to these spaces below.

image via Brit + Co

Ok.  There are so many things going right in this space!!!  First of all it mimics our current setup and I love that this tiny bathroom isn't void of any form or function!  They were able to include a small clawfoot tub (something I'm hoping to do as well).  Mixed metals done with perfection.  Then as if that wasn't enough, they modernized the classic subway tile, by adding this beautiful black and white tile to the space!  And if beauty's in the details...check out that ceiling!  Gah!  This bathroom is a showstopper for sure!

image via Studio McGee

Now, pulling back on the business and going for a simple dramatic tone, this setup makes me happy!  The Kohler Brockway Sink has been a long time favorite of mine and I can just imagine both P & K brushing their teeth nightly here.  I love the addition of board and batten to the walls, something I hadn't considered for the bathroom, but LOVE!  Simple and Classic!

photography by Ashley Poskin via Apartment Therapy

I also LOVE this sophisticated setup.  Super understated, but well designed.  If you're looking to mix metals, this is how you do it!  I've always loved subway tile in bathrooms, and this photo only encourages we consider using it.

Ok, so clearly, I LOVE the look of these.  Why not fully commit here?!  If this bathroom was the master, I'd probably say done and done!  But this is for our only downstairs bathroom.  The bathroom me and the kids use as well as guests.  And while the simplicity of industrial design can be perfect for families, it's just not as youthful and fun as I'm wanting for the space.  And considering this bathroom will be our first reno in the house, it also needs to help set the overall tone.  And full blown industrial is not where I want this house to be during our children's young childhood years.  But alas, this style will absolutely influence our overall design.  Clawfoot tub? Possibly.  Subway tile?  Maybe!  Heck, we may even play up a black and white color scheme.  Well, that's the thoughts for today!  Would LOVE for you to weigh in!

Do you like this style?  Have you incorporated into your own home?  Would love for you to share your thoughts in the comments below!

Lots of love your way today!  Michelle

Farmhouse Inspired Bathroom

Farmhouse Inspired Bathroom

Hello Friends!  I hope you're having a wonderfully relaxing summer and if not, hopefully at the least you're feeling productive!  We just got back from our two week roadtrip west!  I can't wait to share more of that adventure with you (plus we found some amazing places to stay that I think you guys will LOVE!)  For those of you following along on Instagram, you may have seen our stories from the trip along with an unplanned surprise when we returned home.  For those of you that missed it, Sunday evening we returned home to find an overly saturated wall in our downstairs bathroom.  A crowbar, gloves and an hour revealed that behind our bathroom tile, was a wall saturated in moisture and mold!!!  And if that wasn't a big enough wammy, the adjacent wall backs up to our kitchen ~ it too is covered in mold.  So, we currently know that an entire gut of our downstairs bathroom as well as our kitchen is needed.  I'm currently waiting for someone to come access the damage and help determine the source of the problem.  Hopefully, we'll know more this afternoon.  The only other concern (and fingers crossed I'm wrong about this), is that the downstairs plumbing ties directly into the upstairs bathroom (these being the only two bathrooms in our house), and while I had eventually hoped to re-do that bath as well, I'm hoping this current issue doesn't require a complete gut of it as well.  Essentially making our house un-livable for a time being.  Gah!  How's that for a good dose of reality after vacation!  ha!  Well, the good news is we haven't done anything to the house yet.  When we purchased it last year, we knew we were getting into another fixer upper.  But like most things, we just hadn't planned for the fixin' up to be needed so urgently!  And with another project on our horizons (so exciting, I'm hoping to be able to share more about that soon!!), this ordeal really isn't part of our current budget!  But alas, that's life!  So, there are a lot of big decisions needed to be made, and to be completely honest, I haven't even started deciding on our current look and vibe for this current home (cape cod style, located in Atlanta, 3 beds, 2 baths, total: 1,400 sq. ft).  As most of you know, our last home was neutral with lots of vintage accents.  LOVED that house and LOVED that style...for that time in our life.  Now, our family has doubled and with two year old twins in the mix, I'm wanting a house that's more youthful for them, while also staying a bit more classic for us.  So, over the next couple days, I'm going to share my top four design ideas for this house...why I love each, and why I'm hesitant to fully commit to that particular style!  Typically the bathroom isn't where I would start the design process, but given our current situation, that's how we're gonna do it!  So, today we're sharing Design Style 1: Farmhouse!  (See Design Style 2 : Industrial in this post here)

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom

Oh, the modern farmhouse look!  I love the style and the overall mix of whites and natural tones!  It's no wonder that shows like Fixer Upper, have greatly influenced and brought this style to mainstream home design.  For me, I love that this look allows an abundance of white in the home, while also allowing for a lot of texture and depth to a space.  It instantly says laid back, country living!

photo by Laurey W. Glenn, via Southern Living

What's not to love about this space?!  Simple, beautiful!  Horizontal boards, a statement mirror mixed with fairly traditional accents like a pedestal sink and shaded sconces.  Design decisions to note...those built in corner shelves!  We too have a small space, and storage is of the utmost importance!

photo via @babylonstoren

Now, THIS is a bathroom!  If only our space was large enough to accommodate this design entirely!  An updated stock tank acts as a soaker tub, paired with subway tile for a sophisticated take on an otherwise barnyard essential.  With budget being a huge priority for us, this room has me contemplating how to turn a standard horse trough into a luxurious tub!

photo via Heather Bullard

Heather Bullard can do NO wrong!  Like ever!  I've been a huge fan of hers for a long long time and loved when she completed this concrete vanity a few years back!  Her eye for mixing vintage and antique with new design is unparalleled!  This is modern farmhouse done with a parisian nod!

So, what's NOT to love about this look?!  Honestly, the style is stunning.  But my concern lies in two places.  This look is way more my style than Brian's (he tends to lean more towards industrial ~ see that design inspiration here!).  Plus, in living in the city, I'm concerned I would grow wary of this look in a few years, plus our exterior is a traditional cape cod, and I'm a big fan of having our exterior and interiors meld together.  But, trust me when I say, I'm wanting to take huge inspiration in this design style for our current plans, just not quite sure how that will be executed overall!

So, what do you think?  Is the Modern Farmhouse Design here to stay?  Would you use it in a city?  How about with kids?  Would love to hear your thoughts!

Lots of love your way today!  Michelle

P & K | Summer Book Reads

Playroom Reading Nook

With lazy summer days, sometimes the very best thing is to stay in your pajamas and curl up with some good books!  And after giving P & K's room a much needed 'big kid room makeover', we're loving the addition of a little reading nook!  (see that post with all the details here!)  So, today we're sharing our Summer Favorites!  These are the books that currently line our shelves and are on continuous repeat in our house!  So, if you too are looking for  a good summer read (either to gift or for your own kids, I highly recommend considering one of these!)  Happy Saturday Friends!

American Made | Sea Bags Maine

The official start to summer is about a week away!  The season of road trips, seaside visits, pool days, beach days...lazy days.  Summer to me means adventures, big and small.  I love exploring those places that are off the beaten path...camouflaged in their environment, .  It's a local restaurant, a natural spot or a place near to your heart.  Custom House Wharf in Portland, Maine is that place.

Boats come and go, with fisherman unloading their bounty and yet, throughout the hustle and bustle, it's a peaceful scene by the sea.  Years ago I discovered a shop, tucked away, among the working waterfront that instills everything that is good in American design, make and green sustainability.  After years of visiting and admiring from afar, I asked Sea Bags if I could stop by for a behind the scenes look at a company I'm proud to say is 100% American Made.

Upon walking through the front doors you're greeted with colorful totes and accessories, featuring fun appliques and classic prints.  At first glance you assume you've entered into a charming boutique, but peek behind the displays and you'll notice a full production workshop.

What makes Sea Bags unique is that all their goods are handmade from authentic recycled sails...making no two bags alike...yeah, that's pretty remarkable!  And every single product is made here, in their Custom House wharf location.  The shop's footprint is much smaller than you'd expect, especially for a company that is now known globally.  Upon entering, you're met with the soft hum of sewing machines and quickly notice rope neatly hung from hooks and meaningful, vintage sails artfully displayed on the walls.

Hanging from the wood beams are totes that have special meaning to a company that already has so much history.

With fifteen years of experience and over 500 tons of recycled sails, Sea Bags has found a way to perfectly blend form and function.

The day we visited we were greeted by a happy, hardworking team of people.  They walked us through the steps it takes to turn a sail into a Sea Bag .  From splicing and whipping each handle, to hand cutting, to adding grommets, every step is handcrafted with the highest standard of quality and attention to detail.

But beyond the beauty and appreciation for recycled products, this is a company that employs more than 40 employees right in the heart of Portland, Maine.

Order a product online and more times than not it's made to order!  Once complete it's shipped directly to you from this seaside workshop!

And when they tout their location as being part of the working waterfront, they're not kidding.  From the Sea Bags back porch, we witnessed a local lobsterman pull up his daily catch...literally.

You don't get any closer to a local community than that!

I hope one day you can make the trip, to see for yourself the hard work and superb craftsmanship that Sea Bags is committed to in their Custom House Wharf location.

But in the meantime, know that supporting a great American company is just a click away.    There online shop offers all their designs including options to customize your own tote and rare sails, bearing the original insignia, are added weekly to the vintage section.  Regular auctions provide a chance to bid on one of kind, collection pieces, although, if you ask me, all their products are collectible!  So, whether you're needing a new beach tote, travel bag or hostess gift, please consider buying American made!

A big thank you to Sea Bags for hosting us all morning, allowing us to ask way too many questions and giving us access to photograph a behind the scenes look!

Au revoir to my favorite little wharf that resides by the sea!

Blueberry Picking With P & K

Blueberry Picking

This summer I'm loving our little weekend adventures with P & K.  And a few weeks back, we took a day to go berry picking just south of Atlanta, in a town called Fayetteville.

Blueberry Picking

We found a sweet little farm called Adams Farm, which offered blueberry picking among other things!  K took her job very seriously, and was all too pleased to carry her own bucket.

Blueberry Picking

Nostalgic Dress, Boden  |  Vacation Sandal, Boden  |  Hair Bow, Target

She diligently searched for the perfect blueberries.

Blueberry Picking

Knowing which to pick and which to pass on.

Blueberries

Her sweet face, all too cute as she found the perfect spot!

Blueberry Picking

And pleased as punch to show off her bounty.

Blueberry Picking

P enjoyed picking blueberries as well...

Pocket Tee, Target  |  Suede Sandals, Boden  |  (Similiar) Navy Shorts, Crewcuts

But would rather spend his time running through the blackberry isles.

Blueberry Picking

So, off K went, bucket in hand, for more scouring and picking...but this time, for a bounty full of blackberries, while P, ran and ran!

Blackberry Picking

Dear Friends,

I hope you too are enjoying your summer.  Finding joy in the simple things and seeking out adventures, both grand and small!

Love, Michelle
